If you're looking for a way to maintain your guard dog's elite performance, there may be something you're overlooking: grooming. Regularly grooming your dog keeps them healthy, comfortable, and ready for action, no matter the weather or workload.
While most people often associate dog grooming with appearance, for guard dogs, grooming is about performance. A well-groomed working dog feels better, moves faster and stays more focused on the job.
At Guard Dog Training, we know just how much a clean coat and tidy trim can boost your dog's confidence and concentration, which is why we've put together some expert grooming tips for working dogs, so you can help them stay happy, healthy and firing on all cylinders.
Think dog grooming is just about looks? Think again. When you're grooming your dog, you're not just taking care of their appearance. You're also ensuring they're happy, comfortable, and healthy.
A regular grooming routine is important for all dogs, but for working/guard dogs, it's essential. These dogs spent plenty of time outdoors, facing all kinds of weather and terrain. Keeping up with grooming helps you spot issues early—like dirt, matting or irritation—before they turn into big problems that could slow your dog down.
Take matted fur, for example. It can trap heat and moisture, making your dog uncomfortable or even causing skin irritation. A regular brush-up keeps their coat in top shape, prevents overheating and ensures they focus on what they do best: protecting, patrolling and performing like a true pro.
A consistent dog grooming routine can make all the difference when it comes to your guard dog's performance. Regular grooming directly impacts their alertness, mobility, and overall capabilities.
There are plenty of powerful dog grooming benefits that go beyond a shiny coat. Here are a few:
When out and about, they can easily pick up unwanted hitchhikers like ticks or fleas, and those tiny troublemakers can cause big problems if they go unnoticed. By brushing and checking their coat regularly, you can spot those critters early and stop them before they make themselves at home.
Building out a dog grooming routine for your working/guard dog? Here are some of the essentials every routine should include:
How often and how regularly you brush your dog will depend on their coat. For longer-haired dogs, daily brushing with a de-matting comb and slicker brush will help keep their coat healthy, while for shorter-haired dogs, it's worth using a bristle brush 1–2 times a week.
For double-coated dogs, you'll need an undercoat rake as well, making sure you're removing excess hair from the undercoat so it doesn't get tangled/matted.
While it's recommended that you wash your dog every 4–8 weeks, it can be worth washing your working dog more regularly, especially if they're exposed to mud, dirt and debris as part of their work.
When washing your dog, make sure you're using dog-specific shampoo and conditioner, and wash them in lukewarm water (use your elbow to test the temperature).
Once you've thoroughly cleaned their coat with the shampoo/conditioner, give them a proper rinse (so no residue is left behind), and dry them off with a towel.
Clipping your dog's nails regularly helps prevent paw/joint pain. If their nails get too long, it can make walking/running painful, preventing your guard dog from doing their role effectively.
Whether you're using nail clippers or a nail grinder, it's important to familiarise your dog with the experience. Let them sniff the tool you're using, and use treats to build up their acceptance. When you're clipping their nails, hold their paw, trim one nail at a time, and avoid the quick (which is where the blood vessels/nerves live).
Your working dog likely spends a lot of time outside, so their grooming needs will change as the seasons do. Here's how you can shift how you're grooming your pup throughout the year:
